ROSE OF THE WINDS

Winds differ according to the direction from which they blow. By convention, the direction from where they come is always taken. To name a certain wind, either the specific geographical sector from which it blows is spoken of, or it is given its own name. In Catalonia there are many names to designate the winds, depending on both the geographical area and the specific meteorological situations. However, the generic names given to the wind rose are as follows:

SECTORS CORRESPONDING TO EACH WIND. (In Sexagesimal Degrees)

North wind (N): from 337.5° to 22.5°
Wind from the northeast or gregal (NE): from 22.5° to 67.5
Wind from the east or east (E): from 67.5° to 112.5°
Wind from the southeast or Xaloc (SE): from 112.5° to 157.5°
South or south wind (S): from 157.5° to 202.5°
Southwest wind, lee or garbÌ (SW): from 202.5° to 247.5°
Wind from the west or west (W): from 247.5° to 292.5°
Northwest wind or mestral (NW): from 292.5° to 337.5°

SOMETIMES, WHEN THE WIND DIRECTION SWITCHES MORE THAN 45 DEGREES, IT IS TAKEN ABOUT:

North component wind (between 315° and 45°)
East wind (emtre 45° i 135°)
South component wind (between 135° and 225°)
West component wind (between 225° and 315°)
